LOST/STOLEN HARDWARE


In the case of a lost computer or mobile device, notify HIT immediately at 517-355-6531, or hitsupportservices@hc.msu.edu.

In the case of a stolen computer or mobile device follow these steps:
  1. Notify HIT immediately of theft at 517-355-6531, or hitsupportservices@hc.msu.edu.
  2. Contact the proper law enforcement agency.
  • If the equipment is stolen from an on-campus location, report the theft to Michigan State University Police at 517-355-2221.
  • If the computer is stolen from off-campus, contact the local law enforcement authorities to obtain a police report.  

In either case, please provide a brief description of how the device has been lost or stolen so that security remediation procedures can be initiated.  You maybe asked to provide the following information:
  • Network username and email address.
  • List of username and systems you access.
  • Type of data on the mobile device.
  • If the data was encrypted and if so, using what product or technology.

Sensitive data should not be stored unencrypted on a University-owned hard drive or any laptop regardless of ownership.

Sensitive data should not be copied to or stored on smart phones, floppy disks, CD/DVDs, PDAs, non-encrypted USB flash drives, non-University-owned/leased computing devices, or other portable storage or computing devices. Computer applications that require the use of institutional and/or sensitive data, must access the data on a HealthTeam network server that is physically secured from access by unauthorized individuals, as well as protected against malicious software and unauthorized digital access.
